The Hernario Rayos de Esperanza is a small but growing church in Acapulco, Mexico. It was founded by a group of Christians who were looking for a new way to serve God and to reach the community that they live in. The Christian influence goes back well into the ancient Aztec culture, and many indigenous people still support the Spanish language and Catholic Church today. The group had previously attended several local churches but did not feel that any of the churches could connect with them on an intimate level. It was shortly after they began to practice their faith individually, they realized that their calling was to start a church in Acapulco, Mexico. They wanted to reach out to everyone in the community and did not want anyone to feel left out. Many people have heard about how tourists are constantly under attack while vacationing in Acapulco, Mexico, but it is also home to many poor people that are desperately looking for hope in their lives. The founders of this church wanted to offer people a place where they could worship without fear of being judged. They wanted to help the community by offering food, shelter, and spiritual guidance. The group felt that God was calling them to do these things because they had previously served in the Army and could handle any external problems that might arise. The founders of this church were searching for ways to expand their services in the community when they discovered their own set of “rayos de esperanza” or rays of hope. These rays are references from the Bible that describe how people are able to find hope when life becomes impossible. In their case, they saw rays of hope in the Bible that referenced their own church. They realized that God had led them to a place where they could provide a place that all people could come and be inspired by the welcoming environment. These rays helped the people to believe that they would be able to serve others and tackle any problems that might arise. The founders of this church have been able to use their past experience as soldiers as a way of sharing what they have learned from those who have been through struggles before them. They also started an organization called “Casa del Sol to help those who do not have homes because homes are so expensive in Acapulco, Mexico. They have started a group that helps the homeless by offering food, clothing, and shelter. The church has decided to serve through deed because they want their communities to be sustainable. They want to continue providing these services, even after they leave the community because they believe it is important to give back. This ray of hope inspires them each day as they work with people in need and help others reach out for hope.
