Project IGI 2 is a free tactical shooter video game, which was released in 2002 and published by Activision. The game features an anti-terrorist shooting gameplay with various kinds projectiles such as pistols, shotguns and sniper rifles. The player takes control of Jonathan "Jonno" McCandless, an intelligence agent who must infiltrate terrorist cells to prevent bombings and other attacks against the European countries that do not support the international coalition forces. Project IGI 2 was developed by Innerloop Studios and published by Activision Publishing. It has been released for Microsoft Windows on July 4th 2002 as an expansion pack for the first Project: IGI episode: Covert Strike. The game was also released on Xbox in 2003, but it was only available for purchase at the Microsoft Gamefest. The gameplay consists of several missions that can be completed individually or with an additional difficulty mode, the latter being unlocked after completing the game once. Project IGI 2 includes a campaign tutorial with non-playable characters who introduce the player to various tasks and prepare them for action. The player has access to 35 weapons, among knives, submachine guns, assault rifles and even sniper rifles. Each weapon is assigned certain characteristics; some can be silenced while others produce louder sounds that attract attention of enemy soldiers. Additionally, the player can use different ammunition types for each of the weapons. Weapon customization is also available, which enables players to modify body of weapons to better fit their needs. A total of 99 bonus points are available for completing certain tasks within the game; these points can be used to purchase additional equipment or unlock additional characters. A number of vehicles are available in Project IGI 2, including small two-seater vehicles for covert operations, trucks and tanks made by NATO forces, police vehicles and armored trucks for special operations. The player can also use helicopters that are made available after playing through a number of missions. These helicopters are armed with machine guns that enable the players to destroy any enemy targets in sight. The game has received mixed reviews. The game received 7 out of 10 points at IGN, while the game only received 6 out of 10 points on Xplay. The game was praised for its variety of weapons, vehicles and the additional difficulty mode that enables players to unlock additional features; however, it was criticized for its repetitive gameplay and lack of support for online multiplayer mode. Project IGI 2 won Computer Games Magazine's 2002 "Best Sound" award. Project IGI 2 was not very successful in terms of commercial statistics; it did not chart on PC Data's top 20 PC games, although it did chart on their top 40 Xbox games list. Project IGI 2 was also poorly received by some critics. IGN's Craig Harris awarded the game with 6.5 out of 10 points, while Xplay gave it 6 out of 10 points. Frank Provo of GameSpot rated the game at 5 out of 10 points, criticizing its gameplay and annoying sound effects. The game was also poorly received by some reviewers on Amazon; one reviewer criticized the sniper mode for not allowing players to jump for better positioning while another complained about glitches that occurred during gameplay. The game was developed at Innerloop Studios for PC Windows and Xbox (Xbox version was released in 2003).
